Goblins & Kobolds
Gnomes are an enigma to say the least. A mysterious and highly secretive race once thought extinct for ages, they made a sudden, although until recently unrealized, reappearance pretending to be ornaments on the lawns of Those Who Ruined replacing the figurines the destructive creatures had modeled on Dwarven and Elven legends of them.
Today Gnomes are without a doubt the greatest keeps of the remaining bits of knowledge concerning the repairing, and some whisper even making, of Those Who Ruined artifacts. Whether the later is uncertain, but there is no denying they are able to at the very least mimic artifacts through tinkering. Yes the mad Goblins can tinker as well, but their creations are ramshackled together and certainly temporary in existence (quite temporary..). Gnomes; however, create true master pieces with bits and pieces of artifact knowledge.
Gnomes are rarely seen, and some consider seeing one (almost always traveling in one of their unnerving contraptions) as a bad omen. In some cases this is true, for tales spread often of events such as a single Gnome sighting around a settlement preceding the residents arising the next morning to find a perfect mile radius around their settlement completely unearthed with everything from trees to rocks disappeared into thin air down to a depth of over 100 feet. Why such events are done is not known, but most assume they either seek more artifacts or more bits of lost Those Who Ruined knowledge.
And these are only the surface mysterious of this strange race. Other commonly discussed ones are: Where do they live, how many are out there, how many settlements do they have and where are they, and why do they wear those pointy hats?
